Australian Surrealist painters
Victoria, one of my favourite Australian painters is Sir Sidney Nolan, I do not know if you know about The Ern Malley Hoax where two young writers James McAuley and Harold Stewart, believing much contemporary poetry valueless, mixed up a set of poems from arbitrarily selected quotations and references. They submitted these under the pseudonym of ' Erm Malley ' to the literary magazine: Angry Penguins, which published them with a cover by Sir Sidney Nolan. The hoaxers then confessed, but the poems were defended by many for their surreal imagery and suggestive powers.

Maria, I don't suppose you've ever seen a film called Dr Terror's House of Horrors? In it is a story of an art critic who has a bitter hatred for an abstract painter. One day the critic is taking a group of followers round the artist's gallery, and criticising every work he sees, when the artist appears and asks the critic if he would give his opinion on a new work, which has been painted by someone else and not by the artist. The critic agrees, and when he sees the painting he says that this is a good piece of work and that the artist should try to paint like that. When the artist asks the critic if he'd like to meet the painter of the picture, the critic says yes, and the artist fetches from another room.......a chimpanzee!
The critic leaves with laughter ringing in his ears.
Hello All,
I just thought Id add a few thoughts....here goes, Dont fret about your "banishment to the wilderness" Maria,be encouraged by it.The only fault you displayed was having an opinion of your own....if you didn't allready know, that's frowned upon in" certain places".And of course you ,like me and many others obviously upset the "resident pig" or should it be piggess?.....I must say ,that,"that",site" has some good points however..I made a few good friends there..you were one.But now Im banned I sometimes feel like breaking into a song...."free at last! free at last!......thank god almighty! Im free at last!"
I did dload a few podcasts from the site, the first one I thought was very very interesting.....about Druitt, his background etc etc....the next one I listened to ...well...guess who turned up on there?...seems you cant keep a good woman down huh? That was it for me,I deleted them all.... no point inflicting punishment on oneself now..is there?
I was told,in confidence, that the number of complaints about you and I amounted to the "best part of a tidy few"..odd isnt it? Your banishment was odd indeed....there were pics posted before by others...and pics posted since,as far as Im aware they still remain...I think you were right in your assumption that the problem was you received compliments on your pictures....we cant have that now can we?
I see Victoria and Robert have posted here....hi Victoria...hi Robert, hope all is well with you both.
As you can see my typing, grammar, spelling and punctuation hasnt improved one iota ...its appalling I know..but I got in such a habit of deliberately mispelling, mis punctuating, and non-capitalising my "posts" on casebook, for the express purpose of "winding" certain members of the brethren up,that now,I cant write any other way...plus im partially dyslexic.......oddly enough it seems to worry others much more than it does me.You could say I guess ,that" Im the one least worried by my own faults" is that good or bad? Ive no idea.
Anyway thanks for taking the time to translate this rubbish.
regards
Douglas (dougie)
I received this email from Dougie to the nutcasebook people if they are listening. Here it is:

Maria, no I didn't know that story, my neighbour two doors down lives in a heritage house that the Australian artist Norman Lyndsay lived in for part of his life. Also in the street behind is another Lyndsay family house .. it is very ramshackle now, it is said Sidney Nolan spent time there as well.
Victoria, You would like Sir Sidney Nolan as well as two of his significant contemporaries, Arthur Boyd and Albert Tucker. Like Nolan, both these artists espoused an art that tackled themes of a moral or philosophical tendency through the use of symbolism and allusion. One of Arthur Boyd's painting: " Shearers Playing For a Bride " is at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
