Black poodle
I have just finished painting this black poodle. Very tricky to paint. If you paint it too black, then you do not see any details and if you paint too many highlights then it would have looked grey instead of black. So it is a fine balance between the two. It is a commission work, so I hope the lady is going to be pleased with her dog's portrait.

Robert, I'm so glad that you like it. I was thrilled to read your cheerful comment. Today, I feel a sense of accomplishment having at last finished it ! Gave it my last brush stroke this afternoon and it is a wonderful feeling. I still have to sign it though...

The detail is great .. the snout looks so real.
Is it a large poodle, a standard one?
My family have had many poodles over the years, beautiful and very intelligent dogs.

Oh I forgot so say... yes, it is a large French Poodle.
Love the poodle. A black coat is difficult to capture. Curly black hair even more so! I painted a couple of Holstein cattle. I was amazed at the colors reflecting in their coat. I just painted a few harbor seals. The were grey and black. Very challenging!
Hi Nitzee, Yes its a tricky thing painting black or WHITE animals as you can't leave the space empty! and you have to put something on the white space to make it look like wavy hair and at the same time not making the white look grey! Somewhere here, I have a black and white dog. Its tricky painting the white and also the black set of hair, luckily.. this other dog had muddy feet so I was able to put some brown on the paws.
So, the next challenge is to paint a zebra!
Robert, didn't you hear the latest?
The zebra at the zoo in Baghdad died and lacking the money to buy another one, now they have a donkey painted with zebra lines, not to disappoint the children.
The only trouble being, the new "zebra" only responds to a carrot.
As far as I know.. A donkey does not respond to a carrot or a stick!
