Hola ! Notwithstanding the horror of the virus in the ship which didn't thankfully affect us, we did have a good time. We had a pretty room with enormous French windows at the back of the ship where we could see other boats on the high seas or when our ship docked at each destination. The climate was colder than here in Britain and on the excursion to the Etruscan mountains we got wet from tip to toe in a torrential rain that didn't give us a respite and my beautiful summer straw-hat was left as limp as a rag doll ! Maybe I will be able to fix it, if I spray it with starch. If you could see me at that time, I looked like a cat that had been dipped in a swimming pool but the excursion to Tarquinia was really interesting, especially the visit to the museum where they have funerary paintings and ancient stone sarcophagi which are intact and date back long before the Roman era. Afterwards, we were taken to an ice-cream establishment. The five ice-creams would have been very welcome on a hot summer's day but not when we were cold and shivering, dripping rain from head to toe but even so, they were absolutely delicious and I am happy that we didn't catch neither pneumonia nor the blessed virus that was circulating in the ship. On that same excursion a lady recognized Peter from the Heir Hunter show and she yelled out: Peter Birchwood from Celtic Research from her table to ours. She was fascinated talking with him afterwards. There were other people who recognized us from the show, Peter and I were surprised to see this whenever we shared a table with other people.
The excursion to Naples was cancelled, the captain told us the pilots were refusing to come out to direct the ship because of bad weather although an Italian lady whose family was expecting her at the port, telephoned her to tell her they had enquired about it to the port authorities and they were told that the ship was not allowed to dock in Naples as there were too many passengers in quarantine. They couldn't risk unloading people from our ship for reasons of health and hygiene so could not allow them to roam freely in the Napolitan streets. We didn't have any problems with the other countries. Although we didn't get to see Monte-Carlo as the excursion was cancelled due to the Grand-Prix going on, the reason being that the roads would be too congested to get back in time before the ship sailed again. Maybe we will make it another time.
Next, was Cannes. Really pretty with its yachts moored in the harbour. We got there in time for the Film Festival: Palm D'or. We saw the white marquees as we strolled along the beach where the film stars were being interviewed by the T.V. channels. It was very exciting! After that, we were taken by bus to see the red rugged cliffs washed by those intense blue ink waters of the Mediterranean; something really beautiful and impressive to see.
Afterwards the ship headed to Corsica where Napoleon Bonaparte was born: his statue was prominently displayed in the main square and his birthday is celebrated every August. In Corsica they make good use of the plants they grow there, turning them into essential oils. Plants like Myrrh , sea weeds, lemon, rose petals etc are turned into perfumes or potions for different remedies. I bought lemon oil, for sea sickness, then we were taken to a nougat factory where they produce a special Napoleon nougat which includes chocolate and other secret ingredients in the recipe that of course, was not even whispered to us. I had more than my share during the tasting time ! It’s not polite to do this but I couldn't help it. We bought about 5 different nougats. Then we went to sample their wine at another location. The weather was balmy and very pleasant. The roses were already in full bloom. It was a really enjoyable day.

As I was saying..In the ship, there were shows every day at the theater and we saw a very good magic show plus a really excellent romantic Flamenco group. The ship also has a library where Peter would go when I wanted to watch some television. There are several swimming pools, discotheques, several restaurants and many more activities for all those who do not suffer from sea-sickness. The next stop was Gibraltar, even though it is a British territory, the Spanish border is only a stone's throw away. Pounds sterling is the currency. In here, we saw the tail-less monkeys and when Winston Churchill was told that if the monkeys disappeared from Gibraltar, England would lose the peninsula, he immediately had a hospital buit as there were only six monkeys left. He also cheated a little bit, by having more monkeys brought to Gibraltar from Africa. Nowadays, there are 600 !
I forgot to write about Barcelona and Malaga. Too long to tell.
Hallo, Maria and Victoria. Well, Maria, your trip had highs and lows, but at least the crew didn't consist of Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor and Lance Percival. That would have been too much!
Hi Robert, this is time Victoria is in her cruise with the same company we travelled with, on another ship. I sincerely hope that everything will be just wonderful for her and I wished we had gone on that one and not on the one we travelled. But se la vie!
Blimey, everyone's cruising these days.
I won't be cruising but I might have a walk on Southend pier this summer. Does that count?
Yes it counts, for starters there is no worry about getting sea-sick whilst you watch the boats. I don't think we will take another cruise again. We have done that and got the tea-shirt as they say. Victoria must be in Rome by now.
Robert, I just heard from Victoria she wrote from the ship. She was in Barcelona and everything is going very well with her cruise. Did you see the Englad - U.S. football match yesterday? The England team was by far the strongest team and the Americans scored a lucky beginners goal. It was a disappointing draw. England could have done with another goal.
Hi Maria
I wonder if Victoria is in touch with the World Cup as she travels around. She will probably hear about it wherever she goes.
Well, the England team say they are right behind their goalkeeper - which is the best place for them, in case another one slips through his hands!
Hi Robert, Yes, our Victoria can see the BBC wherever she is in the Mediterranean so, no doubt the football its in the news and I also mentioned it to her. Her husband is English so maybe he will be watching. The Aussies also have their foot-ball team in the World Cup.
Yes, everyone is supporting our goal-keeper. funnily enough, in the Iranian channel, they were saying that this ball design is unpredictible, as many other goal-keepers have reported that this particular ball design its unstable because it wobbles once you catch it. Take a look at it. Instead of being round, it has two oblong bumps on each side. The English goal-keeper had caught it and then quite inexplicably it sort of slipped from his hands and rolled in inside the goal barrier. I was quite satisfied how the English played considering the high altitude there is in South Africa which means the physical effort its double they have to save their energies for the big contenders in this game. Spain has got real talented players. I watched the Slovenians and they also have determined men. To me, so long as the English team makes it to the finals I will be happy. Unlike our Eurovision input this year.
Hi Maria
i think Spain won the European tournament two years ago, so they have a chance. Also the Brazilians, Argentinians and Germans.
I always feel disappointed in England, because I remember the great team of 1966. Same with Brazil - I remember their team from 1970.
Hi Robert. I just heard that the Germans beat the Aussies by 4-0. The Germans have also been world champions as well as the Italians although the African countries do have excellent teams as well. I remember Cameroon was awesome 4 years ago. We have to do well, only because foot-ball was invented in England so we have to show some colours out there. I find the trumpets blown by the South A. really annoying! I can hardly hear what the commentator is saying. I wish they were banned.
Yes, the trumpets are annoying. It doesn't seem to often happen that this so-called cultural thing intrudes. I know the Brazilians have their samba, but otherwise the sound conditions are fairly normal, e.g. you don't get Greeks playing bouzoukis.
Yes, even the players are complaining about it like Ronaldo from Portugal. The noise is infernal. Today plays Spain, a favourite to win with the pundits.
I haven't put my bet on yet. I only bet on the World Cup and The Grand National.
We have been in the middle of filming here yesterday and today. The repeat of the Heir Hunters series is being shown right now at 9 P.M. in one of the cable channels and we were told yesterday, that the series is respected in the industry. It is currently shown in the documentary section, if you want to watch it. I'm doing that in the evenings as we didn't have time to see it in the mornings when it was first aired. The current filming will be shown at the beginning of 2011.
That looks like a nice spot in that photo of Peter, plenty of greenery in the background.
I think the racing side of the show was all very well when it started, but the public warm more to the kind of human stories that Peter does. It's a bit like those underwater photography teams - they might show you how a certain shot is set up, the problems faced by the divers and cameramen, and that's all interesting enough in itself, but what people really want to see is the fish.
It is hard to know what people want Robert; as in the super-market the other day the check-out lady told us that she enjoys the programme but she wished there was more competition shown between the companies like it was in the first series. I just replied that it was up to the producers how they want to focous this programme and I also told her that competition means stress for us and also for our competitors with whom we are in very good terms and from our point of view, there is no need to rock the boat there. Because we are, ultimately conducting a business, this is what we do for a living and not some cheap T.V. competition show.
Did you watch the foot-ball last night? they interviewed some English soldiers in Afghanistan to ask them what they thought and they said the lads didn't put their hearts in this match and that it looked like any Sunday match at home they didn't conform to the occasion. Well, it could have been worse.. at least it was a draw. I think they are saving themselves for the other more important matches. There is no point in living your heart on the opening games only to run out of steam with the stronger teams.
Robert, I just heard from Victoria, she wrote from the ship to tell me she has just left Dublin and she is on her way to Greenock in Scotland then she will be in Le Habre in France and after that is Belgium.
Hi Maria
I bet if Victoria is in Scotland and England don't get through, she'll find there are a lot of drunken Scots celebrating.
The team is playing appallingly. Passion was never part of the English international game, but this is zombieism.
They will now have to win their last game.
Hi Robert, Did you hear the latest?
An English fan went to the players cubicle to complain about the game, he told them that for all the millions they get paid they should be running out there with more spirit for England. I thought.. Good on him to tell them a piece of our collective minds. Apparently, now the police are looking for him. But he hasn't committed ANY crime.
Well, he said that he was looking for a toilet. He did find the England team, which is more or less the same thing.
I pity the cleaners who have to clean the English team's toilet, if their accuracy is anything like their accuracy when passing and shooting.
Ha,ha,ha that was very funny Robert.
It could be worse. Look at the French team they do not have a poor sport spirit they even walked out of the training session and had a public spat in what it should have been a private matter. I still think that the England team will overcome their differences and will try to play much better, otherwise they will have a humiliating roasting! Did you see the Brazilians yesterday? Today plays Spain vs. Spain.
Yes the Brazilins are looking good. On the whole though I think it has so far been a poor World Cup from most teams, as far as skill is concerned, with far too many passes going astray, shots blazed over the bar, failure to control the ball etc. Maybe it's something to do with the ball, I don't know.
The French are so concerned about the ball, they've asked whether in their next match they can kick a new ball - their manager.
I have to say that only exciting match was Mexico-France. The Mexicans were relentless and deserved to win. It was after that the French lost their marbles and no doubt they will get rid of their coach when this is over. I read the England team are also going to disposed of their coach if the team doesn't win the World Cup. His fate is assured!
I just heard the news that Portugal beat North Korea 7-0 Wow!! maybe you missed that game Robert.
I saw most of the second half of that one, Maria. A good performance by Portugal.
Honduras were as bad as North Korea and the Spanish should have scored more. But even if they'd won 20-0 they would still have to beat Chile to go through, since Switzerland will certainly beat Honduras.
England!! Ra-ra-ra-ra!
Aha! didn't I say our boys were saving themselves for this result today against Slovenia?
Maybe the little scolding from that fan in the toilets helped a bit. He should be pleased from his gaol-cell watching the England's team score that goal.
You cannot deny they were on top form on this game Robert. This is the kind of foot-ball we are used to watching here. They were absolutely brilliant with a great control of the ball.
Yes, what happened to Bobby Charlton?
Although Capello is not doing a bad job Robert. Did you see how he replaced Rooney when he noticed that he was uncomfortable with his anckle? Its a matter of.. you have done enough now. I'm going to save you for the match with Germany on Sunday. That should be very good. In the meantime.. The French team was sent home yesterday in Economy Class. It serves them right to travel in Cattle Class after their disgraceful behaviour! Ha,ha,ha.
Maria, I noticed that Sarkozy is going to investigate the French World Cup debacle. What on earth has it got to do with him? He's a politician.
Did you hear about the longest tennis match ever? 59-59 in the fifth set!!!
Robert, there is nothing to investigate, its plain obvious that Sarkosy was taking political advantage to deviate the attention from the real problems that the French population is facing since at the moment there are transport strikes that has the country paralized caused by the new policy his goverment wants to introduce about increasing the age of retirement from 60 to 62.
Bye..Bye..American Pie.
The Americans are packing to go home today after their punishing foot-ball defeat against Ghana. I don't like to watch Tennis Robert. Just watching that ball going back and forth its enough to make anyone cross-eyed! or dizzy. I find it terribly boring. Good enough as a substitute for a sleeping pill.
I think the England team had better not come home. The lions that morfed into kittens. What a beating. I have switched my T.V. off. The only consolation is, that its only a game. It won't make me any richer nor poorer.
Well, I try to be philosophical about it, so here goes :
There is no evidence that the England football team exists.
You can't get much more philosophical than that!
Well, all the players were English. If they had chosen a British team, then we could have included Michael Owen who is a terrific player but he is Welsh, so he could not go. I'm sure there are other Scottish players who could have done a good job but as England, Wales, Scotland and Northen Ireland all went on their own separate ways, the team was not as strong as it could have been.
Robert, Victoria is London right now. I'm looking forward to meeting with her.
Hi Maria
Michael Owen has played for England, but I think he was injured this time round.
If we'd had a British team in 1970, we might have won - we would have had George Best to balance Brazil's Pele.
Well, it looks like Brazil are on course to win this World Cup again. I watched them play last night against Chile and they were superb! its amazing the way they control the ball. It was a blessing we didn't have to play against them, otherwise it would have been 10-0. We had better get out there and scout for some real talent. Football should be in the school curriculum. It is after all, one of our national games. The other day, on the Spanish T.V. they had an interesting documentary about how football arrived in Spain and it was when the English bought the Rio Tinto mines. In their spare time, the miners would play football and as they needed 11 men to play, they took on Spanish onlookers to join them in their game. It was there, where the first football introduction and actual club took place in the Iberic Penninsula.
The boys have returned home now. No one went to greet them at the airport but the President of the football association has apologized for dis-allowing Lampard's goal. Capello was asked why the boys hadn't perform well on the last match against Germany, Capello replied that they were too tired. I suppose a millionare's life makes you tired. Maybe that is the reason why I'm feeling tired these days.
