Hygeia ( Health )
Hygeia is the daughter of the first doctor Aesculapius, considered the father of Medicine. She appears with a snake, the symbol of healing, still part of the emblem of the doctor today. She is also an aspect of the goddess Athena and therefore shares her ability to speak to animals and raise the heroic dead.

Hi Maria
I think that's rather superb. That snake seems alive as it coils its way around Hygeia, you can almost see it moving, and there is a lovely sheen on it. I'd love to see how the painting develops.
Well, I tried another skin colour because you said that maybe Mediterranean people should have a tanned skin colour. I prefer the white luminous skin but that is how it came out. The snake is only barely painted. I just thought, I would do a pair with the other painting although the last one is a very small painting, I thought this one would look better if I made it large. At this rate soon I will be painting Adam and Eve !
Adam and Eve? More serpents!
Well, only one more serpent, as you say that I have painted it well. Actually..I was going to paint colours on this serpent but now I have changed my mind as it looks quite realistic as it is now, it might lose its sheen so I will leave it simple as it is, just working the eyes and head. See how your comments are very useful to me? Thank you.
Hello Maria and Robert,
your painting is absolutely wonderful Maria .. or as Robert has so aptly put it .. 'rather superb'
"Adam and Eve? More serpents!"
and an apple? .. that will be the easy part for our Artist Extraordinaire ..
The photo of Hector and Margaret Thatcher is excellent ..he looks very handsome Maria.
Hello Dear Victoria! It is nice to see you drop in for a chat. Thank you for the compliments, I think Hector is by far my best work of art. He has finally met his idol Maggie Thatcher, who has become increasingly frail in recent years and she has rarely appeared in public although Mrs. Thatcher has attended some high profile events, where Hector was lucky to meet her. She is at the moment in hospital for a few days nothing to be alarmed about, she has had a bad flu but the reports are that she is 'chirpy' and she has been undergoing tests as she had a high temperature and had been feeling 'groggy' she is there in hospital as she recovers from a serious bout of flu. Let's hope for a speedy recovery.
About the painting.. I will paint a tree behind Hygeia and light green grass where she is standing. I love to have the canvas white so that I can visualise the rest of the scene in my imagination, I will be posting more as I progress with the painting. The tail of the snake needs more work too.
Maria, maybe put some birds in the trees, to point up the life-giving properties ogf Hygeia, also to show that they're not afraid of the snake?
Hector's lucky to have met his idol. Most of mine are dead!
Good idea, it will make it less threatening as most people including myself are afraid of snakes. Everything in nature can be used to cure mankind including marihuana and other drugs that are banned. I know that they use the poppy seeds for a cough medicine and the indians in Peru use the coca leaf to endure high altitude sickness and to have more stamina but concentrated quantities like is produced illegally, can cause serious health problems.
